Getting the bus from between Polonnaruwa and Kandy is simple and it will set you back a whole dollar or two. It really is the cheapest and most adventurous way to get around this beautiful country.
The trip takes about 3 hours and winds around the beautiful “Minneriya Wewa” lakes. To make sure you get on the right bus, we found it easier to just get a tuk-tuk to the bus station. The drivers are so helpful and will take you right to the very busy you need to get on.
Once you get to Kandy, the main bus depot is a frenzy of activity. If you’re using Kandy as a base from which to travel onwards by rail, the bus station is right next to the rail station. It’s a good idea to stop while you’re here and pre-order a rail ticket if they are available.
Once you’re settled in Kandy, it’s time to wind down with a beer on the deck at the perfectly preserved colonial Royal Bar.
